July 2025 Newsletter

We’ve spent July doing some of our favorite things: helping over 100 tenants get $1 MILLION+ back from their landlords, making Good Trouble, and holding the line to protect rent stabilization in Kingston 💅 No summer break here, just big wins and big plans for the fall… here’s more on what we worked on this month!

Getting $$$ and justice for Kingston tenants

We hosted a free, four-day legal clinic at our Kingston office to help tenants get money back from their landlords, many of whom have been illegally overcharging for rent for the past three years 😡 With support from lawyers with Legal Services Hudson Valley and Hudson Valley Justice Center, we helped 116 rent-stabilized tenants file requests with the state to claim THOUSANDS of dollars they’re owed—plus hella damages on top 🤑

All ETPA tenants are still eligible to file overcharge claims, so if you think you might be one of them, it’s not too late to get your money back! We can still help you if you call our tenant hotline: 845-481-0882

Another huge win on the housing front: because we organized, the State Department of Housing and Community Renewal rejected a greedy landlord’s request to remove Kingston’s largest rent-stabilized apartment complex from ETPA regulation. That means hundreds of tenants get to keep the protections they fought so hard for! You can read more about the decision here.

We Made Good Trouble

On July 17th, communities across the Hudson Valley and the country came together for Good Trouble Lives On—a national day of nonviolent action to show our current administration that enough is enough. In Poughkeepsie and Newburgh, we rallied and spoke out to remind everyone that the power to shape our future doesn’t lie with corporations or political elites—it lies with the people ✊

Upcoming Community Meetings

‼️ Been thinking about getting involved recently? It’s time to lock in! With all the tenant protections being passed and elections this fall, the next few months are crucial for making sure we keep up momentum so we can bring this change forward into next year.

Continued, sustained, collective action is how we claim the better lives we deserve. We did a lot this month, but there’s still so much we need to do—and we need all the help we can get. Sign up for a community meeting or a 1:1 with one of our organizers to find out how you can be part of the fight. Let’s run it!

WHO WE ARE

COMING TOGETHER TO TRANSFORM NEW YORK.

For too long, greedy corporations, billionaires, and political elites have used their wealth and power to rig our country against us. We’re fighting to put power back in our hands.
