TRANSFORMING OUR ENERGY, SAVING OUR CLIMATE

Our current energy system is unaffordable. It’s life-threatening. And it’s driving climate change. Private utility companies continue to use fossil fuels instead of clean energy to maximize their short-term profits, but we’re not making it easy for them. We are fighting to save the future of our planet and establish real democratic ownership of our energy systems.

PASSING BUILD PUBLIC RENEWABLES

We successfully passed the Build Public Renewables Act, a massive victory for the U.S. climate movement, and have set the stage for a renewable energy transformation in New York. We’re continuing to fight for cleaner power, lower utility bills, and democratic ownership of our energy systems—because we are fighting to save the future of our planet.

We’re at the point of no return.

OUR APPROACH

POWER BACK IN THE PEOPLE'S HANDS

We are organizing to win state laws that will transform our energy system. That includes establishing the Hudson Valley Power Authority, a publicly owned utility provider that will serve the public interest, not private shareholders. New York is behind in meeting our climate goals, so we’re pushing bold measures to transition to 100% renewable energy at the rate needed to stop climate change and protect the health of our communities.

LEGISLATION

Bills on the table.

NY HEAT Act
Hudson Valley Power Authority Act

The New York Home Energy Affordable Transition (HEAT) Act would facilitate the state’s transition to renewable energy and help working families afford their energy bills by capping utility costs at 6% of household income. By removing subsidies that fuel the expansion of gas systems, the HEAT Act would push New York to meet its goals outlined in the Climate Act.

The NY HEAT Act will ensure that working families no longer have to pay the financial and physical costs of climate change while big polluters keep raking in record profits.

The Hudson Valley Power Authority Act would bring utilities under public control by establishing a new state power authority, which would be authorized to acquire Central Hudson. Instead of raising rates to please shareholders, the Hudson Valley Power Authority would serve ratepayers, providing clean, reliable, democratically owned utilities at low rates. The law includes measures to ensure easy-to-understand bills, good jobs, and climate justice.

The Hudson Valley Power Authority Act puts power back in our hands, not polluting private energy companies.
