New York Passes Immigration Package to Hold ICE Accountable
The New York State Legislature passed the FY2027 budget, which included an immigration package to hold ICE accountable. This win is thanks to a handful of grassroots champions in the legislature and, more critically, to the pressure our movement built. Because everyday people organized, Governor Hochul and the legislature agreed to hold ICE accountable by banning agents from hiding behind face coverings, stopping them from using our local jails, and prohibiting formal collaboration with state law enforcement.
These victories will make a material difference in many lives and they are not enough. They failed to fully protect immigrant New Yorkers from ICE’s terror campaign by ending all collaboration – including informal collaboration – with law enforcement.
