Ulster County Legislature Considers Backing NY State Effort to Keep ICE Away From Courts
On Tuesday, about a dozen members of the immigrant rights group Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson and other supporters of the Protect Our Court Act attended the Ulster County Legislature’s monthly meeting to urge lawmakers to support the state bill. Many of them held signs decrying actions by ICE.
Paul Mersfelder, a Kingston resident and staff member of Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, said having ICE officers arrest undocumented immigrants who are attending court proceedings threatens the safety of the community because witnesses and victims are afraid to show up in court for fear they’ll be picked up and deported.
