Middletown requests help for accurate census count
After reading an article in the newspaper about a call from U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, and U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand for a greater effort to count Newburgh residents in the 2020 census, Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano told the Common Council that he reached out to those same politicians and requested the City of Middletown receive the same advocacy. “All three have responded back that they will be making the same pitch for Middletown and Port Jervis for additional resources for cities,” DeStefano said.
“Obviously, that’s where the larger, undocumented population live, and we need now to reach out to Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson to make sure that they participate with us in getting those census forms filled out when they do come out.”
Census counts determine the apportionment of congressional delegation representation for the state, as well as the sales tax distribution, DeStefano said.
