Capital Region immigrant advocates get ready for ICE nationwide arrests Sunday
Some local officials welcome collaboration with ICE: Rensselaer County Sheriff Patrick Russo signed an agreement to screen jail inmates and hand them over if they’re wanted by ICE. He could not be reached for comment on Thursday, but he previously told the Times Union that the U.S. is a nation that welcomes immigrants but “we just want them to do it the right way.”
Local activists aren’t surprised by Thursday’s report but want to take it seriously.
“It’s really disturbing but not unexpected. We knew that this was going to be coming back,” said Jonathan Bix, director of Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, that serves thousands in Duchess, Orange, and Ulster counties.
