CITY OF NEWBURGH LEANS TOWARD ‘GOOD CAUSE EVICTION’ LEGISLATION
NEWBURGH – The state’s moratorium on rental evictions expires in a matter of months and municipalities are beginning to look at their own “good cause eviction” legislation.
The City of Newburgh is one of the communities in the Hudson Valley exploring the legislation being promoted by a group called “For the Many,” formerly known as Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson.
The city council appears ready to adopt the legislation. Councilwoman Patty Sofokles said it would help renters and landlords.
“This would give us a leg to stand on to help them more, and it doesn’t go after the good landlords, and there are plenty of them, but the ones we want to go after are the bad landlords,” she said.
Mayor Torrance Harvey said the legislation is a “top priority” for the city council.
