As lawsuit plays out, advocates rally support for Newburgh’s ‘good-cause’ law
“For the Many pushed for the passage of local “”good-cause”” laws in Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Kingston and other mid-Hudson municipalities, arguing that it strengthens protections for renters against predatory landlords seeking to hike rent or evict them without a good reason.

“”These lawsuits are attempts by greedy slumlords to override the will of the people,”” said Daniel Atonna, For the Many’s political coordinator. “”Tenants are the majority. Good-cause eviction passed unanimously in Newburgh. Landlords are not the majority.””
…
Atonna said if the governor, speaker of the assembly or majority leader were to support the legislation, “”it would easily pass.””
“”They don’t even have to wait until January — they could call a special session right now,”” he said. “”Don’t let them act powerless to protect tenants. Our state officials should be showing as much courage as the elected officials here behind me.”””
