NEW YORK’S EXCLUDED WORKERS FUND GIVES MIDDLETOWN IMMIGRANTS HOPE
“When I heard it had passed, I was flooded with such joy,” Perez said.
“I was actually at home when I got the news,” he recalled. “I was with my wife and we heard it on the news before we got the word from Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, but being able to celebrate and hear the news with my comrades it was just so…” He was at a loss for words.
Perez is a member of Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, a regional activist group that advocates for immigrant and social justice.
“I know it is going to help a lot of people,” Perez said. “I, personally, have seen a lot of people who are in need, a lot of people who, because of the pandemic, have to make sure they prioritize their families over any sort of work due to childcare, and people who haven’t been able to get by in general. It’s very heartbreaking for me because I‘ve seen that firsthand.”
