Didi Barrett to be challenged from left in Assembly primary

“POUGHKEEPSIE — A Hudson community leader and local politician announced a primary challenge to Didi Barrett during a small protest Wednesday in the hallway outside the Assemblywoman’s Poughkeepsie office.

The protest, which was attended by a small group of Vassar students and members of For the Many, a Hudson Valley progressive activist group, was one of several to be held at Barrett’s offices. In March, protesters temporarily occupied her legislative office in Albany, posting fake eviction notices in the hallway. They were protesting Barrett’s lack of support for the “good-cause” eviction bill, which would have mandated the automatic renewal of leases. This followed Barrett’s 2021 vote against extending the eviction moratorium, which led to a protest in front of her Hudson office that Cousin also attended, according to the Register-Star.

Though he said For the Many hadn’t yet endorsed a candidate, the organization’s political director, Brahvan Ranga, spoke about environmental issues For the Many and Cousin support, saying Sarahana Shrestha’s victory during the 2022 Assembly primaries showed that incumbents could be unseated on climate issues.”
