Sarahana Shrestha Wins Democratic Primary
Sarahana’s win is a massive step forward towards building a New York for the many. She ran a grassroots campaign that united people around a bold vision for the future and beat a 23-year incumbent backed by the full might of the Democratic establishment.
When Sarahana wins in November , she’ll be the first democratic socialist from upstate New York in the state legislature. It’s significant that this milestone won’t come from a major city like Rochester or Buffalo, but from the Hudson Valley, one of the rural/suburban battlegrounds we most need to build power in to continue transforming New York.
This victory sends a clear message: if the Democratic supermajority in our state legislature continues to stall on critical legislation like the New York Health Act, the Build Public Renewables Act, and Good Cause Eviction, more establishment Democrats will face primaries and lose to progressives.
