March Newsletter

In 2022, we’re growing our membership, winning critical legislation at both the local and state level, and electing champions who will fight for our communities in the halls of power.

Our members are the backbone of our movement, and our monthly community meetings play an important role in growing our base and keeping folks updated on our victories and the fights to come.

At our community meetings in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Middletown, and Kingston last week, we celebrated our recent victories, shared our stories, and talked about the state budget process and how it’s impacting our legislative priorities.

Our next community meetings will  be April 14 & 15 – RSVP to join us!

Good Cause Eviction legislation would give 5.5 million families in New York state a defense against arbitrary or retaliatory eviction and protection from predatory rent increases.

Beacon: WE PASSED GOOD CAUSE EVICTION IN BEACON! The landlord mayor and corporate real estate lobbyists teamed up against us, but we came together with tenants, activists, and organizations like Community Voices Heard to fight back.

Statewide: In 2020, we endorsed Michelle Hinchey for State Senate because she promised to be a champion for tenants in her district. Last week we crashed her fundraiser and asked her in front of her donors why she won’t support Good Cause Eviction. Instead of giving a real answer, her staff ran us out and refused to let us be heard.

Our message to politicians is clear: if you’re in a safe blue district and you don’t support Good Cause, NY Health Act, or Build Public Renewables: We might just show up at your fundraisers and/or primary you.

Speaking of primaries…

We have a Democratic supermajority in the state legislature, but our path to progress is being blocked by the status quo in Albany — one that chooses billionaires and their lobbyists over our families. That’s why we’re all in on climate champion Sarahana Shrestha for Assembly District 103.

We’re up against a longtime incumbent with deep establishment ties – which means it’s critical that we talk to voters NOW and tell them about Sarahana’s vision for a New York that works for all of us. Can you commit to 2 hours of phonebanking with us this month?

Know any folks in the Ulster County area looking for a part-time gig? We’re hiring paid political canvassers at $18/hr – no political experience necessary! Apply here: https://airtable.com/shr9j3hcuwrIg1Yra

Thanks for sticking with us. We’re fired up and hope you are too!

WHO WE ARE

COMING TOGETHER TO TRANSFORM NEW YORK.

For too long, greedy corporations, billionaires, and political elites have used their wealth and power to rig our country against us. We’re fighting to put power back in our hands.
