Columbia County For the Many
We’re officially launching a fundraising campaign to expand our in-person organizing work to Columbia County! Here’s why:
In recent years, Hudson has been reeling from accelerating gentrification. Residents who changed their primary residence from NYC to Hudson DOUBLED in one year during the pandemic, exacerbating a housing crisis that was already boiling over. And the rural communities that surround the city are seeing their costs of living rise too.
If we want to ensure that everyone can afford to live in the Hudson Valley, we need to organize with communities who are most impacted by gentrification and build a movement more powerful than billionaire investors and corporate real estate developers.
Columbia County, particularly the City of Hudson, is an extremely strategic region for us. It’s a Democratic stronghold that anchors several swing seats. The county provides opportunities for rural organizing and Hudson is a diverse city with vibrant Black, Latino, Bangladesh, and & LGBTQ+ communities.
We decided to take this step after conversations and encouragement from our close partners in the area, including Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition and Columbia County Sanctuary Movement. We’ve set a $149,000 goal so that we can open an office in Hudson and hire 2 new staff. If you want to chip in, you can donate at forthemany.org/donate (write “Columbia County” in the notes).
