Climate Champion Sarahana Shrestha Elected in AD-103
Sarahana’s win is a massive step forward towards building a New York for the many. She ran a grassroots campaign that united people around a bold vision for the future and decisively beat a right-wing ideologue in the general election.
Sarahana will be the first democratic socialist from upstate New York in the state legislature. It’s significant that this milestone won’t come from a major city like Rochester or Buffalo, but from the Hudson Valley, one of the rural/suburban battlegrounds we most need to build power in to continue transforming New York.
This victory sends a clear message: Voters are tired of politicians who prioritize the whims of corporate donors instead of fighting to make housing and healthcare more affordable, rectify the injustices of our immigration and legal systems, and address the dire threat of climate change. We need elected leaders who understand the needs of everyday people, and who will fight for them in the halls of power.
