VICTORY! We won our 5th Municipal ID
We just won our FIFTH Municipal ID in less than a year.
Last night was only meant to be a public hearing for the Newburgh Municipal ID. The City Council actually moved the hearing out of City Hall and into a larger activity center in advance because of how many people we’ve been bringing to their meetings.
We brought 300 people and packed this even larger space, with people lining up to express their support and the urgent need for this legislation.
Because of our numbers, because of our people power — the Newburgh City Council decided to break protocols and take a vote at the public hearing. They unanimously voted to pass the Municipal ID legislation we’ve created.
The joy in that room was contagious. Our members chanted and laughed and cried (I cried too). We needed this — not only the concrete municipal ID, but the reminder that when we fight, we win.
Together, we have built something truly historic. Never has any organization in the country waged and won a battle for this many Municipal ID programs. The culmination of our FIVE (and counting!) victories will go on to change thousands of lives across the Hudson Valley.
These victories are helping us build momentum and power for an even greater struggle — the fight to win equal access to driver’s licenses in New York State.
We are closer than we’ve ever been to passing the Green Light legislation that would finally allow undocumented people to get their license and drive without fear.
This Saturday, we organized a forum with over 650 people to educate people about our campaign and demand action from our state representatives.
