June 2025 Newsletter

Wow—June has been a HUGE month! We had major housing wins, made headway in the fight for lower utilities, and also won *massive* electoral victories throughout Hudson Valley and New York. Here’s a roundup of all the things making us feel hopeful, energized, and ready for what’s next—More on that below too 😉

Our Primary Election Sweep

6 of our endorsed candidates swept their primary opponents, heading into the general election with crushing margins. These results—plus Zohran Mamdani’s HISTORIC victory in NYC—prove that voters want candidates who put people over profit.

We’re not waiting for billionaires to give us scraps; we’re organizing to elect leaders who reflect our values. There are a lot more doors to knock and calls to make before November—get some practice in now at one of our ongoing actions!

HUGE Wins for Housing!

Three years of organizing later…we FINALLY won Good Cause Eviction in Middletown! Middletown is the 17th NY municipality to opt in to Good Cause, which bans unreasonable rent hikes and evictions. Over half of those opt-ins happened because of our organizing!

And after three years of lawsuits… New York’s highest court upheld Kingston’s rent stabilization law AND 15% rent reduction—the first in US history!! This sets a powerful precedent for other municipalities to opt into rent stabilization, rein in rent hikes, and enact their own rent reductions. *We* did that!

If you’re a rent stabilized tenant and want to know how to get your 15% rent reduction, contact our tenant hotline at ‪(845) 481-0882‬.

Mixed Results This Legislative Session…

We built incredible momentum for some of our top priorities this legislative session: housing, climate & utilities, and immigration. We gained a ton of new co-sponsors for the REST Act to expand rent stabilization and got more support for the Hudson Valley Power Authority, which are amazing developments. Disappointingly, the legislature killed key portions of the NY HEAT Act that would’ve lowered utility costs for New Yorkers. In better news, they passed a compromise law to end the 100-foot rule and limit fossil fuel expansion. We’ll call that a win—but also a sign that we need to keep building power!

The biggest disappointment was on immigration. Legislators refused to pass NY for All and prohibit state law enforcement from collaborating with ICE, even as masked federal agents terrorize our communities. We’re not gonna let this slide—we’re going to continue calling on our legislators to do the right thing and pass NY 4 All as soon as possible.

We Beat Our Fundraising Goal!!!

Thanks to all of you out there reading these emails, we SURPASSED our goal and raised over $140K in only one week! Over 1700+ people donated, and 60% of those donations were under $30—proving that this movement is funded by everyday people like you. Thank you to everyone who gave!

Together, we’re building momentum to win a future where every New Yorker can afford to live a good life. This month’s victories feel like a new beginning, because they are. Now is the perfect time to get involved! Join us at one of our next community meetings on July 31st!

COMING TOGETHER TO TRANSFORM NEW YORK.

For too long, greedy corporations, billionaires, and political elites have used their wealth and power to rig our country against us. We’re fighting to put power back in our hands.
